MEDIA RELEASE
October 10, 2019

Iqaluit, NU – The Representative for Children and Youth’s Office (RCYO) welcomes Jane Bates as the new Representative for Children and Youth (Representative). Bates was appointed as the Representative earlier this summer by the Commissioner of Nunavut on the recommendation of the Legislative Assembly of Nunavut, for a five-year term.

“I recognize the important role that being the Representative is,” says Bates. “I appreciate the opportunity to help amplify the voices of young people in the territory to ensure their best interests are upheld, individually and collectively.”

Bates joins the RCYO with a background rich in supporting the best interests of young people and their families. Having received her Bachelor of Social Work degree from Ryerson University, she began her professional career as a family services social worker for the Peel Children’s Aid Society. Bates later moved to the Yukon, where she served in progressively more senior positions in the youth and family support services field, until her recent return to Ontario. Bates has specialized training and experience in the areas of child protection, family services, youth justice, crisis intervention, restorative community conferencing, and critical incident investigation.

Join Us: Media are invited to the RCYO for a meet and greet with Bates and other RCYO staff on October 10, 2019, from 1 - 1:45 pm. Opening comments will be made by Bates at 1 pm with time for Q&A to follow.
